How to Style a Co-ord Set: 9 Easy Ways to Wear One Set

A co-ord set is two outfits that already match, and many more once you split it up. Here are nine easy ways to wear one set for work, weekends, travel and evenings.

The short answer

  • Wear the set together for an instant, polished outfit.
  • Split it up: the top with jeans, the bottoms with a plain tee or shirt.
  • Change the mood with shoes, a belt, a layer and jewellery, not a new outfit.

A co-ord set is the closest thing fashion has to a shortcut. The top and bottom are cut from the same fabric, in the same colour or print, so the hard part of getting dressed is already done. But the real value of a set shows up when you stop thinking of it as one outfit. Worn together, split apart and layered, one good set can cover an office day, a Sunday brunch and a week away.

Here are nine ways we style our own sets in the studio, with ideas you can copy straight from your wardrobe.

1. Wear it together, and let it do the work

The simplest way to style a co-ord set is to wear both pieces as they were designed. A matching set reads as deliberate and pulled-together, even if you got dressed in four minutes. Keep everything else quiet: one pair of shoes, one bag, small earrings.

Prints like the Kiara floral tie-shoulder set look best this way, because the print carries from shoulder to ankle and makes you look taller.

2. Wear the top with denim

Most co-ord tops work beautifully with jeans. A relaxed shirt from a set looks fresh with straight or wide-leg denim; a printed or tie-shoulder top turns plain blue jeans into a weekend outfit. Tuck the front of the shirt in loosely so your waist still shows.

3. Pair the bottoms with a plain tee or shirt

Wide-leg pants and flared skirts from a set are easy to restyle with a white tee, a fitted black top or a crisp shirt. Pick a top in a colour pulled from the print, or keep it neutral. The Griva sage flared skirt works with a white tee and sneakers just as well as it does with its matching top.

4. Dress it for the office

For work, choose solid or softly printed sets in calm colours: sage, ivory, mocha and navy. A relaxed shirt with wide-leg pants looks as smart as a suit but feels like loungewear. Add loafers or block heels, a structured tote and a watch. If your office runs cold, a long cardigan or blazer in a neutral shade sits easily over the shirt.

A three-piece set, like the Velmora mocha 3-piece, gives you a built-in layer: wear the inner top for the commute and add the overlay for meetings.

5. Keep it light for brunch and day plans

Daytime is for colour. Floral prints, soft pastels and skirt sets feel relaxed and fresh in daylight. Flat sandals or white sneakers, a straw or canvas bag and sunglasses are all you need. Leave the top untucked and the sleeves rolled for an easy, lived-in look.

6. Take it into the evening

To move a set from day to night, change three things: shoes, jewellery and bag. Swap flats for heels or embellished juttis, add statement earrings, and carry a small clutch. Fluid fabrics with movement, such as the Lavira pleated bell-sleeve set, look dressy straight away, especially in black or white.

Change the shoes, the earrings and the bag. That is usually the whole difference between a day outfit and a dinner outfit.

7. Layer it for cooler days

Co-ords are not only for summer. Layer a fitted turtleneck or a thin full-sleeve tee under a short-sleeve shirt, throw a denim jacket or long shrug over the set, and switch sandals for closed shoes. A relaxed ivory cotton shirt set can also be worn open, as a light jacket, over a slip or camisole.

8. Add a belt to change the shape

A belt is the quickest way to make a relaxed set look sharper. Cinch a long shirt or tunic top at the waist for an hourglass shape, or knot a thin belt over a kurta-style top. Tan or brown leather works with almost every print; a thin gold belt dresses the set up for evenings.

9. Pack it for travel

A set is the most efficient thing you can pack. Two pieces give you at least three outfits: together, top with your travel jeans, and bottoms with a plain tee. Linen-blend and rayon sets are light, and they fold small. We cover this in detail in our holiday capsule guide.

Studio tipBefore you buy, picture three outfits: the set together, the top with something you already own, and the bottoms with something you already own. If you can see all three, the set will earn its place.

How to choose the right set for you

  • Pick your fabric for the season. Linen blends and cotton for heat, rayon for drape, satin for evenings. Our fabric guide explains the differences.
  • Choose the silhouette you already love. If you live in wide-leg pants, start with a shirt-and-wide-leg set; if you prefer dresses, try a skirt set.
  • Get the size right. Check your bust, waist and hip against the Epoqe size guide, and read the fit note on each product.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a co-ord set separately?

Yes. Most co-ord tops work with jeans or plain trousers, and most co-ord bottoms work with a plain tee, shirt or fitted top. Splitting a set is the easiest way to get more outfits from it.

What shoes go with a co-ord set?

Flat sandals or white sneakers for daytime, loafers or block heels for work, and heels or embellished juttis for evenings. Keep the shoe simple if the set has a bold print.

Are co-ord sets suitable for office wear?

Yes, choose solid colours or soft prints in calm shades, with a relaxed shirt or a three-piece set. Add closed shoes and a structured bag for a polished look.

Can I wear a co-ord set in winter?

Yes. Layer a thin turtleneck or full-sleeve tee underneath, add a jacket, cardigan or shrug on top, and switch to closed shoes.
