The short answer

  • Pack five co-ord sets that share a colour story, plus one pair of jeans and one plain tee.
  • Choose light fabrics: linen blends for heat, rayon and chiffon blends for easy folding.
  • Bring three pairs of shoes: walking sneakers, flat sandals and one dressier pair.

The best holidays start with a light bag. Co-ord sets are the secret to packing less: every set is a complete outfit on its own, and the pieces mix with each other and with a few basics to make many more. With five sets you can dress for beaches, long sightseeing days and dinners out without ever repeating a look.

The capsule formula

  • 5 co-ord sets (10 pieces) in colours that work together.
  • 1 pair of jeans or plain trousers and 1 white or black tee.
  • 3 pairs of shoes: comfortable sneakers, flat sandals, one pair of heels or embellished flats.
  • 1 light layer: a shrug, denim jacket or the overlay from a three-piece set.
  • Swimwear, sleepwear and accessories as your trip needs.

Worn together, the five sets are five outfits. Split and re-paired with each other, the jeans and the tee, they easily make fourteen or more, enough for two outfits a day.

Step 1: Pick a colour story

Choose two or three base colours and one accent. A capsule in sage, ivory, brown and one blue print mixes easily; so does black, white and one floral. When every top works with most bottoms, you can get dressed in the dark.

Step 2: Choose your five sets

1. A linen shirt-and-shorts set for the hottest days

A breathable linen-blend set like the Lara shirt and shorts is your beach and pool outfit. Wear the shirt open over swimwear or knotted at the waist with the shorts.

2. A relaxed set with full-length pants for sightseeing

Temples, markets and long walks call for something cool that covers your legs. The Ovel linen-blend set in brown or olive is comfortable all day and looks smart in photos.

3. A printed set for colour

One bright print, like the Kiara floral set or the Ovila blue paisley kimono set, lifts the whole capsule. The top also brightens your plain jeans.

4. A kaftan for the beach and lazy mornings

A satin-blend kaftan such as Heritage Glow works as a cover-up, a breakfast outfit and, with sandals and earrings, an easy dinner look. See our kaftan styling guide.

5. One evening set

A fluid set in black or white, like the Lavira pleated bell-sleeve set, is ready for a rooftop dinner with heels and statement earrings.

Step 4: Pack it small

  • Roll, don’t fold, rayon and chiffon pieces; they spring back with fewer creases.
  • Fold linen loosely along its seams and pack it on top. Embrace a few creases, or hang it in the bathroom while you shower to steam them out.
  • Pack each set together in a pouch, so you can grab an outfit without unpacking everything.
  • Stuff socks and small items into shoes to save space.
Studio tipWear your bulkiest set and your sneakers on the journey. It frees up space in your bag and you arrive ready to explore.

Adjusting for your destination

Beach holidays (Goa, Kerala, the islands)

Swap the sightseeing set for a second linen or rayon set, and add a sun hat. Light colours keep you cooler in strong sun.

Hill stations

Keep the sets, add a warm layer and closed shoes. Long-sleeve sets and full-length pants are the most useful.

City breaks

Prioritise sets with full-length pants and comfortable walking shoes, and pack one dressier evening set.

Frequently asked questions

How many outfits do I need for a 7-day trip?

With five co-ord sets, a pair of jeans and a plain tee, you can make fourteen or more outfits, enough to change for the evening every day.

What is the best fabric for travel clothes?

Linen blends are coolest in hot weather; rayon and chiffon blends fold small and resist heavy creasing. Mix both in your capsule.

How do I stop clothes creasing in a suitcase?

Roll soft fabrics, fold linen loosely along the seams, avoid overpacking, and unpack as soon as you arrive. Hanging pieces in a steamy bathroom removes most creases.
