The short answer

  • Measure your bust, waist and hip over light clothing, with the tape snug but not tight.
  • Match your numbers to the size chart, then read the product’s fit note: relaxed, regular or fitted.
  • Between two sizes? Choose the larger one for structured and fitted styles.

Ordering clothes online should not feel like a guessing game. Most sizing problems come from one of three things: guessing your size from another brand, measuring in the wrong place, or not reading how a style is meant to fit. The fix takes two minutes and a soft measuring tape.

What you need

  • A soft tailor’s measuring tape (a phone charging cable and a ruler work in a pinch).
  • Light, close-fitting clothing, or measure over your undergarments.
  • A mirror, or a friend to help you keep the tape level.

How to measure your bust

Stand straight with your arms relaxed by your side. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level under your arms and across your back. Breathe normally and read the number where the tape meets. Wear the bra you usually wear with tops.

How to measure your waist

Find your natural waist: the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel. Bend to one side and the crease that forms is your waist. Wrap the tape around it without pulling in your stomach.

How to measure your hip

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Check in the mirror that the tape is level all the way round; if it dips at the back, the number will be too large.

Don’t forget length

For tops, measure from the highest point of your shoulder down to where you want the hem to sit. For pants, measure from your waist to your ankle. Compare these numbers with the lengths given on the product page, especially if you are petite or tall.

Read the size chart

These are Epoqe’s standard body measurements in inches. Match your bust, waist and hip to the closest row.

Size Bust Waist Hip
XS 34 26 36
S 36 28 38
M 38 30 40
L 40 32 42
XL 42 34 44
2XL 44 36 46
3XL 46 38 48
4XL 48 40 50
5XL 50 42 52

Measurements may vary by about an inch from style to style. Some earlier styles run XS to XXL, and every product has its own chart: tap Size Guide next to the sizes on any product page. You can also see the full chart in centimetres on our size guide page.

Body measurements vs garment fit

A size chart lists body measurements, not the measurements of the garment. Every style adds a different amount of room, called ease:

  • Relaxed and oversized styles, like relaxed shirts and kaftans, have generous ease. If you prefer a closer fit, you can size down.
  • Regular styles follow the chart closely.
  • Fitted, structured or pleated styles, such as tailored shirts and pleated tops, sit closer to the body. If you are between sizes, go up.

The fit note in each product description tells you how the style is meant to sit. The Griva flared skirt set, for example, has a relaxed top and a skirt with an elasticated waistband, which makes it forgiving across sizes.

What if you are between two sizes?

  1. Decide which measurement matters most for the style: bust for tops and dresses, hip for pants and skirts.
  2. For fitted and structured styles, choose the larger size.
  3. For relaxed styles and elasticated waists, your usual size or the smaller one usually works.
  4. Still unsure? Lay a top or pant that fits you well flat, measure it, and compare it with the product chart.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure over clothes?

Measure over light, close-fitting clothing or your undergarments. Thick clothes add inches and can lead you to order a size too big.

Which measurement is most important for a co-ord set?

For the top, your bust; for pants and skirts, your hip, and your waist if the waistband is not elasticated. Check both pieces, since a set is usually sold in one size.

Is my size the same in every brand?

No. Sizes vary between brands and even between styles. Always compare your measurements with the chart for the exact product you are buying.

Do Epoqe sizes run small or large?

Our chart is based on body measurements, and each product notes whether it is relaxed, regular or fitted. Relaxed styles have extra room; fitted styles sit closer to the body.
